A tyre can look like a perfect match on size alone, then still be wrong for the vehicle. That usually comes down to the service description – especially the load index. If you have ever looked at a sidewall and seen something like 225/45 R17 94Y, the 94 is the load index. It tells you how much weight that tyre can carry when correctly inflated. It is not a rough suggestion and it is not a quality grade. It is a specific rating that must suit the vehicle.
What tyre load rating actually means
Tyre load rating, often called the load index, is a numerical code linked to a maximum load the tyre can support. The higher the number, the greater the carrying capacity. For example, a load index of 91 carries less than a 94, and a 94 carries less than a 98.
That matters more than many drivers realise. Your tyres are not just supporting the car at rest. They are dealing with passengers, luggage, fuel, braking forces, cornering loads and road impacts. On SUVs, vans and heavier saloons, the margin becomes even more important.
The key point is that tyre size and tyre load rating are separate things. Two tyres can share the same size but have different load indexes. So if you are replacing tyres, matching the size alone is not enough.
Tyre load rating guide: where to find it
You will normally find the load index in three places. It is shown on the tyre sidewall, listed on the vehicle placard or handbook, and usually included in online tyre listings.
On the sidewall, it sits just before the speed rating letter. Using 225/45 R17 94Y as the example again, 94 is the load index and Y is the speed rating. Both matter, and both should be checked together when choosing a replacement.
The vehicle manufacturer’s recommended fitment is the safest starting point. That recommendation takes into account axle weights, suspension setup and intended use. If the car left the factory with an extra load tyre, there is usually a reason.
Why the correct load index matters
Running a tyre with too low a load rating is a bad idea, even if the tyre physically fits the wheel. An underrated tyre can overheat, wear faster and perform poorly under load. In harder use – motorway driving, full occupancy, towing or carrying tools and equipment – the risk increases.
It can also affect the way the vehicle feels on the road. A tyre that is not rated for the car’s actual load may feel less stable, especially through bends or during sudden braking. On heavier vehicles, that difference can be noticeable very quickly.
There is also the legal side. In the UK, tyres must be suitable for the use they are put to. Fitting a tyre below the required load rating can create problems at MOT time and may raise awkward questions after an accident.
Can you fit a higher load rating?
In many cases, yes. Fitting a tyre with a higher load index than the minimum specified is generally acceptable, provided the size, speed rating and overall fitment are correct.
That said, higher is not always better in every situation. Some higher load rated tyres have a stiffer construction, which can alter ride comfort. On performance cars, premium SUVs and manufacturer-specific fitments, the right answer depends on the vehicle rather than a simple rule of more is better.
This is where proper fitment advice matters. A heavier duty tyre may suit a loaded van or SUV very well, but a lighter hatchback used mainly for town driving may not benefit from it in the same way.
Extra Load and Reinforced tyres
You will often see XL, EL or Reinforced on a tyre listing. These markings usually indicate a tyre designed to carry more load than a standard version of the same size, when inflated to the correct pressure.
Extra Load tyres are common on modern cars, particularly German marques, estates, SUVs and performance models. They are not just for commercial use. A BMW, Audi or Mercedes may need an XL tyre in a fairly ordinary-looking size because the manufacturer specified it for the vehicle’s weight and chassis setup.
This catches people out because the size can appear interchangeable. A standard load 255/35 R19 may look close enough to an XL version in the same size, but if the original vehicle requirement calls for Extra Load, that detail should not be ignored.
Load rating and tyre pressure go together
A tyre only achieves its intended load capacity when it is inflated correctly. This is the part many drivers miss. The load index is not a promise that the tyre will always carry that weight regardless of pressure.
Underinflation reduces the tyre’s ability to carry load safely and increases heat build-up. That can lead to shoulder wear, poor fuel economy and, in serious cases, structural failure. Overinflation has its own drawbacks, including a harsher ride and a smaller contact patch.
So if you carry heavy loads regularly, tow a trailer, or use your vehicle for work, keeping pressures correct is just as important as choosing the right load index in the first place.
Common situations where load rating matters most
The obvious one is vans and commercial vehicles. They spend more time carrying tools, stock or equipment, and often run near their working limit. A tyre that looks acceptable on paper can be the wrong choice if the load rating is too low.
SUVs are another common example. They are heavier than many drivers assume, and that weight does not disappear just because the car is used mainly for school runs and shopping. Add passengers, luggage and motorway speed, and the tyres are doing serious work.
Performance cars also need attention here. Low-profile tyres on large wheels can have very specific load and speed requirements. Premium fitments are often engineered around exact tyre specifications, not just width and diameter.
Then there are part-worn tyres. Price matters, especially when budgets are tight, but load rating still has to be right. A cheap tyre that does not meet the vehicle’s required load index is not good value.
How to choose the right tyre load rating
Start with the vehicle manufacturer’s specification. Check the handbook, fuel flap sticker, door shut label or current tyre sidewall if you know the existing fitment is correct. Look at the full service description, not only the size.
Next, think about how the vehicle is actually used. A car that regularly carries family, luggage or equipment may need more attention than one used lightly. If it tows, covers long motorway miles or runs on larger aftermarket wheels, fitment accuracy becomes even more important.
If you have changed wheel size, be especially careful. Moving to a different diameter or profile can affect available tyre options, and not every tyre in the new size will offer the same load index. That is one of the main reasons wheel upgrades should be matched properly rather than chosen on appearance alone.
When in doubt, ask for fitment advice from a tyre specialist rather than guessing from a search result. It saves money, avoids returns and reduces the risk of fitting something unsuitable.
Mistakes to avoid
The most common mistake is assuming the old tyre was correct. Previous owners, budget garages and quick online purchases do not always get every detail right.
Another is focusing only on price or brand while ignoring the service description. A premium tyre with the wrong load index is still the wrong tyre. The same goes for choosing a standard load version because it is cheaper than the XL version the car actually needs.
It is also worth avoiding mixed specifications across an axle. Even if two tyres share the same size, differing constructions or load ratings can affect balance and consistency.
A quick real-world example
Take a family SUV fitted with 235/55 R19 tyres, specified at 105W XL. If someone replaces them with a 101W tyre in the same size because it was cheaper and available sooner, the issue is not obvious at a glance. But the replacement has a lower load capacity and may not meet the vehicle’s requirement.
That difference becomes more relevant when the car is fully loaded for a holiday, running at motorway speeds in warm weather. On paper it is a small change. In practice, it is exactly the sort of detail that should be checked before fitting.
Getting tyre load rating right is less about memorising charts and more about respecting the vehicle’s actual needs. If the markings on the sidewall are not fully clear, it is worth checking before you buy – because the right tyre should fit the car, the load and the way you use it.
