How to Choose Winter Tyres for Your Car

A cold, wet Dorset morning can expose the limits of a summer tyre long before snow arrives. If you are wondering how to choose winter tyres, start with the roads you actually use: early commutes on untreated lanes, regular motorway miles, steep driveways or trips to higher ground all call for slightly different priorities.

Winter tyres are not simply tyres with a deeper tread. Their rubber compound remains more flexible in low temperatures, while the tread pattern uses extra sipes – the fine cuts across each tread block – to create more biting edges on cold, wet, slushy and snowy surfaces. That can mean more confidence when pulling away, braking and cornering when conditions turn.

How to choose winter tyres for UK driving

The best choice is rarely about buying the most aggressive-looking tyre. It is about matching the tyre to your vehicle, your usual journeys and the weather you face between late autumn and early spring.

For many UK drivers, cold rain and greasy roads are more common than deep snow. Look for a quality winter tyre that performs well in the wet as well as carrying the correct winter markings. The Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake symbol, often shortened to 3PMSF, shows that a tyre has met a recognised snow-grip test. It is a more useful indicator of genuine winter capability than a tyre that only carries an M+S marking.

A winter tyre is generally most effective once temperatures regularly fall below around 7°C. That is not a legal threshold or a reason to change tyres every time the forecast dips overnight. It is a practical guide to when the compound and tread design begin to offer a worthwhile advantage over a conventional summer tyre.

Start with the correct tyre size

Your tyre size is the non-negotiable starting point. It is displayed on the sidewall in a format such as 225/45 R17 94V. The first figures describe width and profile, R17 is the wheel diameter, while 94V gives the load index and speed rating.

Check the vehicle handbook, tyre pressure label and the sizes already approved for your exact model. Premium vehicles can have several permitted wheel and tyre combinations, and front and rear sizes may differ on performance models. A tyre that physically fits the wheel is not automatically the right fitment for the car.

You should maintain at least the manufacturer’s required load rating. Speed ratings also need care. Some winter tyres may have a lower speed rating than the summer tyres originally fitted, provided this is suitable for the vehicle and local requirements are followed. A visible speed reminder may be needed. If you are unsure, ask before ordering rather than relying on a generic vehicle search.

Consider a dedicated winter wheel set

If you run larger alloys in summer, moving to a smaller manufacturer-approved wheel diameter for winter can be a sensible option. A smaller wheel often allows a tyre with a taller sidewall, giving more protection from potholes and a little more compliance on rough, cold roads. It can also make seasonal changes quicker and reduce the chance of cosmetic damage to your best alloys.

This depends entirely on brake clearance and approved fitment. Offset, centre bore, bolt pattern and wheel load rating all matter. On vehicles with large brakes, particularly performance BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Porsche and Range Rover models, not every smaller wheel will clear the calipers. Fitment expertise is worth more than guessing from the diameter alone.

Choose the right winter tyre type

There are three realistic routes for most motorists: dedicated winter tyres, all-season tyres or remaining on summer tyres. The correct answer depends on how often you need to drive when conditions are poor.

Dedicated winter tyres are the strongest choice for drivers who travel regardless of the forecast, regularly use rural or elevated roads, start work early, or visit areas where snow and ice are more likely. They offer the most reliable cold-weather grip, but they are not intended for year-round use in warm weather. Their softer compound can wear faster and feel less precise during hot summer driving.

All-season tyres are a sensible compromise for many lower-mileage UK cars. A good 3PMSF all-season tyre can deal well with occasional cold snaps, wet winter roads and light snow, while avoiding the cost and storage of a second set. The trade-off is that it will not usually equal a dedicated winter tyre in severe winter conditions, nor a dedicated summer tyre in hot, dry performance driving.

Staying on summer tyres may be adequate if you can leave the car at home when snow or ice is forecast and mainly drive on well-treated urban routes. However, do not assume that four-wheel drive removes the need for suitable tyres. Four-wheel drive helps a vehicle get moving, but tyres still determine much of the braking and steering grip. A heavy SUV on unsuitable tyres can still struggle to stop or turn on a frozen road.

Read the label, but do not rely on it alone

The UK tyre label is useful for comparing fuel efficiency, wet grip and external noise. For winter use, wet-grip performance deserves close attention, because rain is far more frequent than snow for most drivers. Lower rolling resistance can also save fuel, although the difference should not outweigh safety and suitability.

The label cannot tell the whole story. It does not fully describe how a tyre behaves in slush, on packed snow, in standing water or after a freezing night. Use it alongside the 3PMSF marking, independent test results where available, and the tyre maker’s intended use. A budget tyre with a winter pattern may appear attractive, but the consistency of compound quality, wet braking and long-term performance varies significantly between products.

Do not overlook tread depth and tyre age

The UK legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tread, around the full circumference. For winter driving, that is not a sensible target. Winter tread features become less effective as they wear, and many drivers replace winter tyres at around 4mm to retain useful snow and slush performance.

Check for uneven wear before fitting a winter set. Excessive wear on one shoulder, a feathered tread surface or a worn inner edge can point to incorrect alignment, worn suspension components or unsuitable pressures. Fitting new tyres without resolving the cause can shorten their life and affect how the car behaves in poor weather.

Tyre age matters too. Inspect the DOT date code on the sidewall, along with the condition of the rubber. Cracks, hardening, repairs of uncertain quality and damage around the bead are warning signs. Part-worn tyres can be a practical option when properly inspected, legal and matched correctly, but they need careful assessment for tread depth, age, damage, repairs and previous use. They should never be a blind purchase for a safety-critical winter fitment.

Fit winter tyres as a complete set where possible

For predictable handling, fit four matching winter tyres. Mixing tyre types across the axles can create an imbalance in grip, particularly during emergency braking or when cornering on wet roads. Fitting winter tyres only to the driven wheels may help traction when pulling away, but it can leave the other axle with far less grip and make the car less stable.

If a full set is not possible, follow the vehicle manufacturer’s advice and seek guidance on the safest pairing. On a four-wheel-drive vehicle, differences in rolling circumference can also place unnecessary strain on drivetrain components. Matching size, model and wear level is especially important.

Professional fitting should include correct balancing, tyre pressures and a check that the wheels seat properly. If your vehicle uses tyre-pressure monitoring sensors, make sure they are handled and reset correctly. A short alignment check is also worthwhile if the previous tyres showed uneven wear or the steering does not feel straight.

Plan for storage and the change back

Once temperatures stay consistently mild, change dedicated winter tyres back to your summer set. Clean and dry the removed wheels and tyres, mark their original positions, and store them away from direct sunlight, heat, oils and solvents. Tyres on rims can be stacked or hung correctly; loose tyres are best stored upright and rotated occasionally.

A second wheel set makes this process more straightforward, particularly if you want to protect refurbished or premium alloys from winter salt and pothole damage. It also lets you inspect both sets properly before the season changes.

The right winter tyre should make your car feel more dependable, not merely more prepared for a rare snowfall. Choose an approved size, insist on sound fitment, and be honest about the roads and weather you cannot avoid. If the details are unclear, a specialist check before fitting is far cheaper than discovering a mismatch on the first icy morning.
